Top 3 Hiking Trails Around Reykjavik You Can Reach by Bus

It was Sunday morning and I had just enjoyed a delicious breakfast of pancakes prepared by Luise. The idea of going for a hike popped into my mind, but there was one problem—I didn’t have a car.  I did some research and found a fantastic hiking spot near Reykjavik that I could easily reach by bus. So, I decided to head to the Esjuraetur Hiking Center for a thrilling hike up Mount Esja, where I could soak in the beautiful natural landscapes and enjoy breathtaking views of Reykjavik.

 MOUNT ESJA

Hiking in Mount Esja from Reykjavik

Things To Know Before Going To Mt Esja

Mount Esja is a moderate hike, perfect for families too. It’s not too challenging, but I would still recommend being careful and staying on the designated trail, especially if you’re not experienced. The hike covers a distance of 6.9 kilometers, with the highest peak standing at 914 meters (2,999 feet). You can embark on this adventure at any time of the year.

If you’re planning a winter hike, make sure to wear proper hiking shoes and bring essential equipment like crampons, hiking sticks, warm clothes, and thick socks. Along the trail, you’ll find signs indicating the difficulty level of different sections. Keep in mind that Mount Esja is a popular hiking spot, so if you go on weekends or during the summer, expect to see many fellow hikers and runners on the trail.

As you hike, you’ll encounter a picturesque stream flowing down the mountain, adding to the serene atmosphere. If you get thirsty, feel free to drink from the stream—it’s safe and refreshing! And once you reach the mountain’s summit, get ready for a jaw-dropping view. Capture the different colors that surround you—the brown of the mountain, the green of the trees, and the white of the ice.

In total, my hiking adventure and return to the hiking center took about 2 hours and 30 minutes. However, keep in mind that if the weather is bad or the ground is muddy, it may take a bit longer.
